CAMPAIGN
CROATIA 2003
We went on a mission to Croatia, where we spent two weeks. Our missionary team in Croatia consisted of mainly Norwegians and three people from Poland. We are very glad that Mariusz Marczewski from Lublin was able to go with us. His brother, Andrzej, lent us his car and thanks to that our journey was twice cheaper than if we had gone by train or bus. Besides, we were able to take some amplifying equipment with us. The first place where we had an evangelistic campaign was Orahovica, a town in the north of Croatia inhabited by 5,000 people. There is an evangelical church there, Evandoeska Crkva, which has had about 50 members for many years now. After the evangelism in a local cinema the pastor of that church was surprised and rejoiced to announce that for 20 years he hadn't seen so many people responding to the Gospel in that town. The meetings took place in the hall of the "Dvorana" cinema, which seats about 100 people. Each day the hall was completely full. About 30 people, apart from children, prayed for salvation and forgiveness of sins. One meeting on Sunday morning was devoted particularly to children. Many of them prayed for
salvation.
The second place of our evangelism was Slavonski Brod, a town of almost 60,000 people. The border with Bosnia goes though it. It used to be one town, but after the war it was divided by a border between two countries. For a few years there has been a small church there consisting of about 20 members which leads really pioneering work. It was the first time that evangelism on such a large scale took place in that town. Several hundred people could hear the Good News about salvation in Jesus Christ. Many people present at the evening meetings went forward, confessed their sins and repented. A lot of children as well as older people gave their lives to Jesus in prayer. The pastor's wife said that she had never seen such evangelism in her life. We were particularly impressed by young people who experienced the latest war, which had a great impact upon their lives. A young man said to me, "The best years of my life were taken away by the war". The saddest thing is that it happened in the middle of the civilized Europe and not even ages, but only a few years ago. As regards jobs, this region of Croatia has unemployment of over 25%. The earnings are lower than in Poland, whereas the cost of living and basic facilities are much more expensive than in our country. However, a much worse thing than the material aspect is lack of hope among the young generation that something can change for better and that God can help them. After the campaign local Christians invited us cordially to come back again with an evangelistic programme, especially to the places with few believers or without churches.
We are praying to come back to Croatia and reap even a bigger harvest for the Kingdom of God. Maybe you are the one that God wants to send to this beautiful country that is waiting for the Gospel. Maybe you will be able to help in a practical way so that other Poles could go there as missionaries. We know Croatia for the beautiful coast of the Adriatic Sea and a rich tourist haven for holiday-makers. This time we went to the part of Croatia where nobody seems to go for holidays. Many houses look gloomy with empty holes instead of windows in the walls. There are buildings which have no roofs at all and the walls of many houses are riddled with missile pieces and snipers' bullets. Thanks be to God that He hasn't forgotten those people and He's offering them salvation by grace through faith. Despite all these experiences and sufferings they had to bear during the war, we want to bring the message of hope to those who need it the most. We had a wonderful time in Croatia. We could see God moving in many people's lives. We believe that by God's will we will soon go back there.
